2006, if you want to go skiing at Christmas (or anytime in December or for the New Year week for that matter), you need to be aware of how the holidays are going to be organised by ski tour operators.
See below for our summary based on what the larger tour operators will be doing. The smaller chalet operators that usually operate Saturday to Saturday will be offering a variety of dates - call us to check.
For the main tour operators that usually depart on a Saturday, in December, holidays to Austria will be on a Thursday, not a Saturday. This means that from the first departure until Christmas, many holidays will be 7 nights, Thursday to Thursday. The Christmas week is the same, Thursday 23rd to Thursday 30th. Then, for the popular New Year holiday week, departures will be Thursday to Saturday, a 9 night holiday. (Thursday 30th to Saturday 1st). Thereafter for the rest of the season, the departures will be the regular Saturday to Saturday cycles as we are used to.
However, France, Switzerland and Italy (via Turin) will be working on a different system: Monday to Monday through December, including the New Year week, and then a 5 night holiday is available on the 5th Jan (Monday to Saturday).
Furthermore, there are some Tour Operators that usually depart on a Sunday instead and they will continue with their normal schedule, meaning that their New Years week will depart on Boxing Day. Confused? Here's a simple table to explain what's going on...
